Ps. 27:1 The Lord can be our light, deliverance, and strength, in times of battle and trouble 27:5; 119:114. Remember, the psalms are poems of prayer and song expressing the full range of human emotions and experiences. We can relate to the people who wrote them so that we will trust the Lord in our full range of emotions and experiences.
A hiding place is a refuge, a shelter. If we believe the Lord is our safe refuge, let’s seek him, praise him, pray to him, and hope/trust in his word, both individually, and congregationally 27:4-8, 119:14.
When I’m facing battles and troubles, it doesn’t always seem like I’m “hidden.” What does this mean?
The Lord:
I. Treasures us Ps. 27:5; 119:114
Two different Hebrew words are translated “hide” in 27:5. They both mean to hide. The second word means to hide as a refuge. The Lord is our refuge and our rock.
The first word for hide also means to store up or treasure. Your word I have stored up, treasured in my heart 119:11.
Mt. 13:44 Some say the kingdom of heaven is the treasure, and we’re to give our all for it with joy. But Jesus told seven kingdom parables here, and he explained one of them just prior to the one on hidden treasure Mt. 13:36-38. He is the Son of Man; the field is the world. Jesus gave his all, joyfully, to redeem the world back to his Father, and claim us as his treasured ones Heb. 12:2.
II. Preserves us Ps. 31:19, 20; 32:5-7, 10, 11; 64:1-10
We’ve seen blessings of fearing and trusting the Lord in other psalms. The main blessing is staying close to him, in his presence, where he gives us grace to limit the effect of plots and strivings or accusations against us.
Thank God, for the blessings of forgiveness, cleansing, and freedom from sin. He forgives because Jesus took the judgment and wrath of God against our sins for us on the cross. Flood waters can represent spiritual assaults, accusations, danger, sorrow, and judgment. The Lord is with us through it all, surrounding us with songs of deliverance, surrounding us with steadfast love and mercy.
Ps. 64:1-4 Let’s pour out our hearts to God in prayer as David did. God is our ultimate protector, defender, and vindicator. Let’s trust him and praise him.
The Lord treasures us and preserves us for eternity Col. 3:3, 4 NLT.
Are you hidden in Christ? Is he your true life?
What battle, trouble, failure, or loss are you facing?
Is the Lord your hiding place, the one who treasures and preserves you?
Will you seek him, praise him, pray, and trust his word to you now?
