I began a series last week on one of the most important men in the Bible. Gen. 18:17-19 (We’ll go back to see events in Gen. 13-17) God chose Abraham as the man and father through whom he would bring the blessings of forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life to all people.

Jesus contrasted Abraham’s physical descendants with his spiritual children. Jn. 8:31-33, 37-40 Abraham is the spiritual forefather, and God is the Father of all who believe in Jesus as Messiah and Lord. Jn. 8:31-42 God’s children love Jesus and have his word in their hearts.

God designed complementary roles for moms and dads; both are valuable. On this Father’s Day, let’s look at five virtues of our Father in heaven. These are five virtues of godly fathers, and they are virtues all followers of Jesus are to live by.

Love inspires these actions 1 Thess. 2:8.

Godly (not perfect) fathers and believers:

I. Lead Gen. 26:4, 5; 1 Thess. 1:5-7

As a Father, God leads by the example of his self-sacrificing love for us. He leads us in truth and righteous living. Abraham instructed his children to keep “the way of the Lord,” and he led the way for them. As we share God’s word and follow the Lord with the help of his Holy Spirit, we lead the way for others to know and follow him.

II. Intercede Gen. 18:23-33; 1 Thess. 1:2

Abraham interceded or prayed for his nephew Lot and his family to be saved. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to our Father’s will. These church leaders or fathers prayed continually for the believers. Let’s cover our loved ones in prayer and pray God’s word for them daily.

III. Encourage 1 Thess. 2:10, 11

Discouragement can drain us emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. The Lord knows we face many sources of potential discouragement to our faith. Thank God, he encourages us by his Spirit and his word, and he encourages us through other believers. Will you look to encourage others with words of faith in God?

IV. Comfort 1 Thess. 2:11

Like encouragement, God cares and comforts the brokenhearted. God comforts us so we can comfort others. Comfort may simply be our prayer, our presence, and a holy hug.

V. Urge 1 Thess. 2:11, 12

The word for charge means to testify or urge. Testify of God’s love, power and faithfulness. Urge others on, especially your family, in their walk with Lord.

God loves you and wants you in his family. Are you born again?

How do you want to be like your Father? Stay in close fellowship with Jesus and do God’s word to grow more like him.
