The Lord is known by his covenant-names: Jehovah Jireh, Yahweh Shalom, etc. We see the Lord display the truth of his names throughout God’s word, though the name may be recorded only once or twice. One name is recorded about 300 times Ps. 46:7, 11. Hosts of armies, heaven’s armies Mt. 26:53; Rev. 19:11, 14.

This song speaks to us on global, congregational, and personal levels. 46:1 Refuge or shelter; 46:7, 11 is stronghold. Trouble can be distress, calamity, affliction.

Therefore, we will:

I. Not fear Ps. 46:2, 3

Fear is a natural emotion and response at times. But we will not live in fear because the mighty Lord of heaven’s armies is with us. The Hebrew imagery in this poem is not limited to natural disasters. In the Bible, waters can represent people and nations, and mountains can represent kingdoms Rev. 17:15; Jer. 51:24, 25. In global turmoil or personal turmoil, let’s draw closer to the Lord our God.

II. Not be toppled (shaken) Ps. 46:4-7

Here, Jerusalem is a picture of the church Mt. 5:14. In contrast to turbulent waters, we have a “river” of living water from God’s Spirit flowing through us Jn. 7:37-39.

The kingdoms of this world are moved and toppled. The kingdom of God is not shaken Hb. 12:22, 23, 28. We get to be in, and invite others in, to God’s kingdom.

III. Be still Ps. 46:8-10

God tells wicked, warring nations to be still or “stop fighting,” (CSB) and know that he is God. We are to pray for his kingdom to come and his will to be done until he returns and establishes his peace in the world.

“Be still” is a word for us too. “Surrender your anxiety” TPT. The word for be still, is also translated, let go. We may need to let go of our desires to control people or situations, etc. Know that he is God. Do you know him? Is Jesus your Lord and leader Jn. 10:26-28?

Ps. 46:6b, 8a I believe it’s helpful to be still and behold, focus on, think about, and speak, the wonderful and powerful words and works of the Lord. Mk. 4:39 Jesus can stop wars and calm storms within us.

IV. Exalt God Ps.46:10, 11

God will be exalted. Let’s lift him up now with our praise and thanksgiving. The God who fulfilled his word to Jacob, is our God. He is our refuge and he is with us.

How do you need the Lord of Heaven’s armies today?

Will you let go of anything that’s hindering your walk with the Lord or your witness for him ?
